ANU SCHOOL OF MUSIC AND SYNERGY PERCUSSION

Master of Music

Professional Performers' Program

We always summarise Synergy as a 'world of sound with percussion at its heart' - our core practice is percussion, and percussion, to us, is all about sound. Any graduate passionate about exploring and performing percussion music at the highest level, who wants to make use of Synergy's 36 years of performance, commissions, collaborations, and composing experience, who needs space and equipment to develop their ideas, wants to connect with like-minded players, form a group and do gigs, study with award-winning performers...-is warmly invited to apply.

t;">We see our work today as a combination of honouring the giants of the past and opening up new territory, much as it ever has been. We aim to dialogue percussion with itself, other art forms, instruments and spaces, against the backdrop of the world we live in, which after all is changing at a rate of knots. Since the group has been around so long, there is a huge resource of repertoire - some of the most played percussion ensemble pieces in the world were commissioned by Synergy - and some of the coursework will naturally be dedicated to immersion in this tradition. But equally we hope that candidates, like us, will be dedicated to opening up new territories and creating music of their own in dialogue with composers or other artists, based on the wonderful foundation that this tradition offers. Let's get amongst it.

- Timothy Constable Artistic Director

Chamber music for percussion comprises some of the most significant music of the twentieth century. This Masters program allows for individuals and percussion chamber ensembles of two to six players to enrol in the ANU's Master of Music degree with the aim of creating a professional percussion ensemble. Students will have access to high quality tuition, an extensive collection of percussion instruments, a dedicated ensemble practice studio and wide-ranging performance opportunities. Tuition and mentorship will be provided by Gary France, Head of Percussion at the ANU School of Music and members of Australia's premier percussion ensemble, Synergy Percussion, Timothy Constable, Artistic Director. A significant research highlight of the program will be access to the vast repertoire of works commissioned by Synergy Percussion.

The Master of Music is undertaken by coursework over one year with ensembles being assessed as a cohesive group developing an individual chamber style and repertoire. This program offers extensive performance opportunities for participants with both ANU and Synergy Percussion through their public performance programs.
